OAKLAND — The End-of-the-Line Bookstore will be opening Wednesday, May 23, for the 2018 summer season and will be open through early October.
End-of-the-Line Books is a not-for-profit bookstore that resells used books. It is located in the historic boxcar at the B&O Railway Station on East Liberty Street in Oakland. The bookstore is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The bookstore features a full range of novels and non-fiction categories. Depending on donations, the store will occasionally feature audio books, CDs, videos, DVDs, puzzles and games. No book costs more than $1, and many are less.
The bookstore is staffed entirely through volunteers and proceeds from the bookstore go to two organizations.
Girl Scout Troop 55004 serves girls from Brownies through Seniors from six schools throughout Garrett County. In an effort to serve the community, they have donated thousands of boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to local charities and soldiers overseas. Through their accomplishments they have achieved the highest award a Girl Scout can receive, the Gold Award. Donations from End-of-the-Line books help fund their activities and service projects.
The Garrett Branch of the American Association of University Women is the second recipient of funds from the bookstore. Locally, AAUW provides over $4,000 in scholarships to area women college students each year. AAUW is also the sponsoring organization of the Girls Empowerment Middle School Project.
AAUW-Garrett Branch also helps support the newly created AAUW-Garrett College Student Chapter, one of only 100 such chapters across the country, which promotes development of leadership skills, community involvement, and advocacy for women’s equity. Student chapter members will also be helping with staffing the bookstore this summer.
For more information on the bookstore or to volunteer with any of the sponsoring organizations, contact Linda Carr at lindacarr7125@gmail.com.
