‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ Gets a Modern Update in First Look Trailer

Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia and Stacey are back together again! Netflix released the first look at the upcoming The Baby-Sitter’s Club series, and it’s a fresh take on the popular Ann M. Martin books that filled so many shelves in the 80s and 90s. This time, the girls are still middle schoolers in Stoneybrook, Connecticut, but their characters have been updated to fit the 21st century — we spy an iPhone in today’s teaser trailer.

Along with a short clip giving us a glimpse at the show, Netflix also released the cast for The Baby-Sitter’s Club reboot. The upcoming series features Sophie Grace (Kristy Thomas), Malia Baker (Mary Anne Spier), Momona Tamada (Claudia Kishi), Shay Rudolph (Stacey McGill), Xochitl Gomez (Dawn Schafer), Alicia Silverstone (Elizabeth Thomas- Brewer), Mark Feuerstein (Watson Brewer) and Marc Evan Jackson (Richard Spier).

The Netflix series comes years after the original The Baby-Sitters Club show, which aired for one season on HBO in 1990. The 2020 version coming to streaming this summer follows the same plot featuring a group of friends from different backgrounds and experiences who bond through the start of their own babysitting business. Rachel Shukert (Glow) is the series’ showrunner and Lucia Aniello (Broad City) serves as executive producer and director.

Silverstone told Entertainment Tonight last month that she was honored to be a part of a series that meant so much to people. “When I was asked to do this and I learned that it was such a beloved thing, I was really excited about that,” she said. “It’s always fun to do something that people care so much about and bring it back.”

Martin created her “Baby-Sitter’s Club” book series in 1986 with the release of her first novel. She then went on to write over 35 books herself before other authors joined in to write for the series.

The first 10-episode season of The Baby-Sitters Club comes to Netflix July 3. Watch the teaser trailer in the video above.
